Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scout Niblett (2010)

question: how do you get your ultra-minimalist singer/songwriter album to not suck? answer: get Steve Albini to produce it. and when i say ultra-minimal, i mean it; nothing here but Scout's voice, electric guitar, and drums (she plays 'em all) - no synth-y overdubs, back-up singers, or shitty canned strings, just Albini's trademark inside-your-skull percussion, fuzzed-out dirges of riffs, and vocals vaguely reminiscent of the chick from Denali (what ever happened to her?). there's excellent use of silence throughout - it never feels cluttered or busy, yet manages to be incredibly forceful at times. a must listen for the engineer/producer crowd.

good luck getting a job, tho

Ever since big black ripped our heads off aeons ago we have known that Albini is god, why are we surprised by anything he does?

This utterly spell binding. The use of space, and contrast has real impact. And of course when those classic "Albini" drums kick it slaps you in the face like a brick. Brilliant.
