Warpaint - Exquisite Corpse EP (2009)

I'm currently really loving this album. It's very interesting and very good. I don't know what else to say. Just check it out.

EDIT: I originally posted this as "Warpaint EP", but apparently the blog I got it from had it wrong, so I changed it. Change your tags because I don't feel like uploading a correction.

Get it here.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots (2004)

British indie with post-rock aspirations. This is their first and best LP, released shortly after their guitarist killed himself, along with a handful of earlier EPs for good measure. Emotional, orchestral, and fist-pumping.

Adebisi Shank

Math rock and I don't get along. I'm pretty sure that I'm one of the few people in the world who hated "Mirrors" by Battles (I heard the vocals on the first track and promptly vomited). But it's really, really hard to dislike Adebisi Shank. They play a brand of math rock that is catchy, energetic, technical, and occasionally noisy. Oh, and their guitarist is one of the most tasteful show-offs I've ever heard.

I've uploaded both their EP and debut album for your listening pleasure. Leave a comment if you like it/hate it/think it was ok, but nothing to write home about.

Kap Bambino - Red Sign Acid Eyes (2009)

As Cities Burn - Come Now Sleep (2007)

While the passionate scream-driven songs are long gone, the passion inherent in As Cities Burn’s music is still here. Cody Bonnette does a fine job of taking over vocal responsibilities, but the resulting record is much different than Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest. The album feels a lot more experimental, and isn’t quite as driven, taking its time on several occasions. Come Now Sleep is no less intense than its predecessor however, which is a testament to the musical integrity of these guys, considering the decreased number of screams from one album to the next. Come Now Sleep also intensifies the melodic sense that Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest subtly, but surely contained, with choruses that read like anthems to be chanted and repeated over and over again.

Waxwing - For Madmen Only (1999)

Beautiful alternative rock/emo music. I don't really feel like elaborating, I didn't get a hell of a lot of sleep last night and my brain is half past dead.

Björk - Debut (1993)

i was 8 when this album came out and remember watching the video for big time sensuality all the time on tv, now i can't remember if it was that same year or a couple of years later, my mom got me this album and enjoyed it a lot, i was happy kid. now i'm 24 and still love every second of this album, got nostalgic the other day and got it again, decided to post it, so here it is: bjork's debut, a great album everyone should have.

Claude Bolling: Suite for Cell & Jazz Piano Trio (1990)

Claude Bolling is a French jazz pianist whose suites for jazz piano trio and a solo instrument have been much in demand, especially among classical players. Much of his fame stems from his suite for Cello and piano trio, written for Yo-Yo Ma, who performs it here with Bolling himself on piano. It's carefully constructed but with a great romantic jazz aesthetic, and it has hooks like Katy Perry.

Team Teamwork - Ocarina of Rhyme (2009)

Mashup of hip hop and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time tunes. This album was very well done. The only thing I really don't like about it is that Getting Treasure and Battle tunes were originally annoying, therefore they ruined their respective hip hop songs. You'll hear what I mean if you listen to it. These are the artists that are featured in this album: Dr. Dre, Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Lil' Keke, Pimp C, Clipse, P.O.P, Common, Aesop Rock, Edan, Spank Rock, MF Doom, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg.

ADULT. - Let's Feel Bad Together (2008)

ADULT. started in the nineties as something of a precursor to the electroclashes. As soon as the ADULT. sound became a movement, they abandoned it in favor of ever more sinister synthesizer punk. Sometimes the Lydia Lunch-esque wailing can get a bit too dramatic to be taken seriously, but you gotta love those dissonant, bassy synth sounds.

Steven Wilson - Insurgentes (2008)

You may know Steven Wilson as the frontman of British prog-rock band Porcupine Tree. This is his first solo album released under his own name, and it's pretty damn good. In fact, it's one of my top albums of 2008. At times, the music sounds like a darker, more brooding Porcupine Tree, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Wilson has a knack for fusing a variety of genres into an easily digestible yet highly listenable package, so there's a little bit of everything on "Insurgentes": drone, prog-rock, industrial, noise...I'm even tempted to mention post rock. Check it out.

An extremely unique album of sampled bicycle sounds by a couple of chicago musicians/sound artists. This pic is their live setup.

Isis - Wavering Radiant (2009)

ohmygodohmygodohmygod. finally. they finally produced a new album. It has been too damn long. This album is more progressive and less post-rock than the previous album (In the Absence of Truth). While not my favorite I really do enjoy Wavering Radiant. Get this album you fuck!

The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall, Vol. 1 (1953)

This is one of the baddest jazz records ever. It's the last time Gillespie and Parker recorded together, and rest of the quintet is the best there is- Roach, Powell, and Mingus. Bird is playing a really mediocre plastic sax called a grafton (he had a habit of pawning his horn for smack, even hours before a gig) but he makes it sing anyway. You also get a sense of what a fucking hipster Diz was back then in some of the chatter between tracks. All in all, a fantastic record.

Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine (1994)

Pure melodic greatness. One of my favorite voices. Deft trumpet playing. Pretty soft, chilled out atmosphere. Some good lyrics. The best version of the title song.

Very highly recommended.

Love some Chet.

KBB - Four Corner's Sky (2003)

Prog rock/jazz fusion with violin. Absolutely delicious. It's comparable to Mahavishnu Orchestra, but unlike John McLaughlin and the gang, KBB is relatively easy to follow. Maybe that wasn't the best description. How about...Liquid Tension Experiment, with violin instead of guitar wankery? I don't know. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Yasushi Yoshida - Little Grace (2008)

There's not much to say about this album. Ambient, instrumental, contemporary/modern/neo-classical music by a japanese composer who is also involved in theatre and visual arts.  Nice music with strings, guitar, piano, and other such instruments.  Pretty good if you're into that sort of thing.

Cybotron - Colossus (1978)

Cybotron was an Australian duo that formed a decade before the Detroit band of the same name, and they should have been the most influential band on the planet. They were making mature, beautiful electronic prog rock while Kraftwerk and King Crimson were still getting their shit together. The only problem is most of their music was completely unavailable until it was re-issued twenty years after Cybotron split up, and everyone acknowledged how mind-blowing this stuff would have been if they had had a decent label. Colossus is one of their best known and most accessible albums. If you like it, I have the rest of their stuff, but I won't know to share unless you leave a damn comment.

Get if you like: Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind

Daikaiju - S/T (2005)

An instrumental surf rock band from Alabama whose name is Japanese for "giant monster". The band members all wear masks onstage, and apparently they put on a bitchin' live show. Check out the description on their myspace:

"Who is the Daikaiju? Kabuki men deliver most high rocket music. Special reverb skill combo for full impact! Loud Roken-Roll for earful pleasure! Impressive radiation of hyper-dimensional springy sound, divine psychedelic wind for your special liking. Worship Psycho-surf band Daikaiju daily for good luck and health!"

Grab your board and Godzilla toys, folks. Those are some pretty gnarly soundwaves coming your way.

Dodo - Electric Love + The Android's Dream (1999)

I've been trying to up three albums for the past few days, but every time Firefox crashes or mediafire pitches a goddamn fit or some other shit happens. Anyway please forgive me; have some EPs while I pull my hair out.

Dodo (this Dodo, there are like fifty of them) is or was a quirky electronic artist who put out some odd little EPs in the late 90s was was never heard from again. Is she still active? Who knows. Her music is Electronic with old timey sound effects, or maybe Cabaret with synthesizers. Anyway,

3 Headed Monster - S/T (2007)

Instrumental power/thrash/progressive metal with lots of guitar noodling. I'm not sure how else I can describe this album. If the cover doesn't do it for you, then this probably isn't your bag.

Shapiro - You Are Alone (2005)

Shapiro formed in the year 2003 in the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The band consists of brothers John (drums & bgvs) and Nathan Granofsky (guitar & bgvs); Jeremy Teter (vocals, piano), cousin of the Granofsky brothers; and Carl Shapiro (bass), from whom the group’s name is derived. Their music is an infectious style of indie pop, reflecting the guys’ love of both classic rock and newer indie rock, as well as their formal classical and jazz training.

Saw these guys a while back, thought their music was pretty catchy, so I bought this album. Worth a listen.

A Wilhelm Scream - Ruiner (2005)

A Wilhelm Scream is a / band from New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States. Their name is a reference to the Wilhelm scream, a famous stock sound effect which mainly is used in films.

Bo Burnham - S/T (2009)

Bo Burnham is a cocky 18 year old kid who took a page out of Stephen Lynch's book and scribbled more dirty jokes in the margins. Some of his songs could've been written by Lynch, but to be fair, a good portion of this young man's material is punny to a degree that will make your head spin. Whether or not you've seen the YouTube videos that made him famous, this album is a fun listen. His Comedy Central special will premiere on March 27th.

Architects - Ruin (2007)

Architects sophomore effort is an impressive release. The band retain all the qualities that made their debut so entertaining and incorporate new elements into their sound, such as clean vocals. Well worth checking out if you like technical metal.
(much better than Hollow Crown)

Baroness - First & Second EPs (2005)

Baroness is sludgy and twangy and great. This is their first two EPs, which have a different sound than their newer Red Album LP, which is also great but goes in a new direction. First is only 18 minutes but covers a lot of stylistic ground, and Second was recorded in one 22-minute take.

Bud Powell - Time Waits (1957)

Bud Powell is one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. This record is from later on, when he was in poor health in just about every possible respect, but this is still a formidable record. He's playing with a really tight rhythm section, which lets him stretch time like he's chewing bubblegum.

Sounds like: Thelonious Monk, bop piano trios

Capsule - Blue (2008)

Capsule - based out of sunny Florida - is a hardcore band more along the lines of Angel Hair than many records on Deathwish or Bridge 9 with some spazzy guitars and some tight rhythms that took me back a bit when this first popped on the stereo.

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (1971)

Worth downloading just for the 10-minute intro track, a psychedelic, fuzzed-out, extended guitar solo by the amazing Eddie Hazel. "According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told Eddie Hazel to play the first half of the song like his mother had just died and to play the second half as if he had found out she was alive." The tracks that follow it are swing through hard rock, gospel, soul, and of course, funk. Definitely recommended.

Gospel - The Moon is a Dead World (2005)

The only album released by Gospel before their 2006 break up. Their fusion of hardcore and old school prog may sound pretty awkward on paper, but you'll be a believer once that keyboard riff hits you 50 seconds into the first track. Fantastic album.

Eero Johannes - Eero Johannes (2008)

Part of the skweee movement, because that's totally a real thing. Anyway, Eero Johannes' style has a distinct blend of delicately crafted funk and energetic, improvised chiptunes. The year-end release received almost no critical attention, which is kind of a shame; the album was a nice relief from the gaping void of good dance music that was 2008.

The Pax Cecilia - Nouveau (2004)

The Pax Cecilia are a tough band to describe. Their music incorporates elements of post rock, hardcore, metal, and classical, so it's safe to say that they sound fairly unique. They have released two albums so far, both of which they have given away for free. In short, they're great people who make great music. One of my favorite bands at the moment.

As an added bonus, you can download their latest album, "Blessed Are the Bonds," from their website. It's got more of a post metal sound and has a lot more in the way of piano and strings. I prefer this album to "Nouveau," as do most people, but I feel that "Nouveau" is frequently overlooked. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Man Man - Rabbit Habits (2008)

This is the latest release from Man, Man. The "Viking-vaudeville, manic Gypsy jazz" band from Philadelphia, PA. It's really hard to describe how they sound, but one simple way to do it would be to say awesome. Give these guys a listen if you've never heard them before. One of my favorites.

The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Traveller (2003)

The Lord Weird Slough Feg (recently shortened to just "Slough Feg") is a band from Pennsylvania that plays a fairly unique brand of heavy metal, combining elements of folk/power metal and more traditional Iron Maiden-esque riffing. "Traveller" is a concept album based on a 1970's science fiction RPG, which may seem like an odd subject for a power metal album, but then again, "weird" is the ban's middle name. Literally.

Get this if you like fun music. The riffs and vocal melodies will be stuck in your head for days.
