As Cities Burn - Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest (2005)

[download...]

Here in the present year of 2009, As Cities Burn is a completely new machine compared to when they burst onto the scene, praised as the new Underoath in 2005. While today’s incarnation hints back at possibly the best debut in Solid State's history, the differences at vocals (brothers TJ and Cody Bonnette switching duties) and sheer band size (from six members to four) are minuscule in comparison to the sound shift. But, let us return to June 2005 to re-experience the debut that set this incredibly talented band into the scene.

Marissa Nadler - Little Hells (2009) FIRST LEAK

This is Marissa Nadlers new album, due out on the third of March. The first promo CD leaked yesterday and so far we are the only blog to have it, I don't even know if it's on private trackers yet, so grab it here before the web sheriff gets pissy. Aside from the uber 1337ness it's also really really good music, probably her best album so far. And there's no album art yet so here's a picture of her.

Indie, dreamy, moody and depressive are some tags that describe the sound of this. They belong to Saddle Creek so they are from Omaha. Jake Bellows has an incredible rough voice, the guitars and a little bit of folk makes a perfect harmony.

Architects - Hollow Crown (2009)

[download...]

How Brighton’s Architects have managed to stand out from the suffocating crowd of metal / hardcore outfits influenced by Meshuggah’s low-end guitar lurch, the throat-shredding howl of Converge’s Jake Bannon, The Dillinger Escape Plan’s staccato one-two rhythms and breakdowns from the state of Massachusetts is its own mystery. The number of upstarts cut from this cloth putting “new songs up” daily on Myspace is only proportionally rivalled by American military spending in Iraq, but good on the Searle brothers and their mates for hitting the road and getting in people’s faces.

Kanye West, DJ Benzi and Plain Pat - Sky High We Got the Remix Special Edition (2009)

get it if you like: a-trak, diplo, lupe fiasco, lil wayne, etc.

this is kanye west's latest mixtape, mixed by dj benzi and plain pat, features a large collection of awesome kanye west remixes (though the only track from kanye's most recent album, 808 and heartbreak, is love lockdown). great if you're a fan of kanye, remixes, mixtapes or if you're looking for awesome party music.

An Emerald City - An Emerald City EP (2008)

Really really good. I don't care that it's New Zealand music and it's designed to suck the way they fuse eastern (especially Arabic) influences into a post rocky type of thing is amazing. Also one of the guys plays a half sized sitar and the violinist is this really cool asian guy.

World's End Girlfriend - The Lie Lay Land (2005)

[download...]

The Lie Lay Land mixes all of the above into a potent brew. Sure, the breakcore moments are few, and the glitchery remains fairly subtle, but the songwriting is more coherent and mature than ever. There are moments of awesome 6/8 riffage and machine-gun beats which recall Sheffield’s 65daysofstatic, but that’s about the only point of comparison other than WEG himself. That said, the Japanese scene is where this music sits best, with a little less of the feyness and post-Bacharach over-sweetness that always seems to creep in.

The DHDFD's - Fromage du Pouvoir and Live EP (2008)

Sorry about lo-res album cover. The DHDFD's are one of the best live bands I have ever seen. They do crazy shit and get kicked off and wear fucked up clothes and are generally amazing. They also sound really really good. This is their latest EP and a live recording (with some tracks missing, which the band themselves must have cut out.) Anyway they are all awesome guys  who make awesome music and play awesome live. They toured Japan recently and I think they're planning to do something in Amerikkka so if you ever get the chance to see them then do it fgt. Go to their myspace too. You will not find this anywhere else on the internet, so make sure you download at WFLM.

get it if you like: the whip, the rapture, lo-fi fnk.

auto-auto are two talented young guys from sweden who have set out to do things a little differently. left cold by current trends and removed from all conventional approaches, they are creating their very own vision of electronic pop music that is refreshingly easy-going, highly club-compatible and pretty darn cool.

asobi seksu's third album sounds nothing like it's predecessors, it still has that kind of cute melodic sound but it's safe to say the shoegaze days are gone. despite this album being more indie rock/dream pop it's still good, personally i like their s/t and citrus better but i enjoyed this as well, i'm sure most of you will like it more than i did though.

Between the Buried and Me - Colors (2007)

I just bought this on vinyl the other day, and noticed it wasn't posted yet. I bet most of you have heard this album already, but if you haven't yet do it. Ultimate-Guitar named it Album of the Year in their annual This Year in Metal.
...Colors blows anything else considered to be "metal," or any other genre for that matter, out of the water. The technical ability, artistic vision and spot-on execution are absolutely confounding. Listening to it as a whole provides a truly unique experience that shows a band pushing themselves to their creative and musical limits and coming out with a monstrous work of art.

Zu - Carboniferous (2009)

The Italian trio of Jacopo Battaglia (drums), Massimo Pupillo (bass) and Luca T. Mai (saxophone) formed in 1999 after having worked together in local theater. Driven by a punk rock work ethic, Zu have played an astounding number of over 1,000 gigs worldwide including Europe, North America, Asia, Russia, and even Africa. The have released fourteen albums to date. Musically they’re one mind only, ever-so-slightly inconvenienced by the necessity of being spit into 3 bodies. Their post-human tightness and devious compositions have attracted collaborators ranging from free-jazz legends to the godfathers of experimental sludge, and on this album they are joined by Mike Patton and King Buzzo. Very very good err... Music.

La Dispute - Vancouver (2006)

Since the other La Dispute album I posted went over so well (see this), I figured I ought to post their other full length album, Vancouver. This is their debut album from 2006. Though it's not as good as Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair (in my opinion), it is still excellent.

As always, if you enjoy the music you download, you should consider purchasing an album or other merchandise.

Xiu Xiu - The Air Force (2006)

[download...]

The Air Force is, without a doubt, Xiu Xiu’s best album and grandest statement. Continuing to sabotage otherwise-perfect pop numbers, here the sabotages in question make the Xiu Xiu experience all the more compelling, instead of distracting. “The Fox & The Rabbit”—at the one-minute mark—suddenly throws in a swelling string section to compete against the electro pop-and-lock IDM beats and surprisingly simple lyrics about looking into space and simply not knowing one’s place in the universe. By the end, keyboard reverb is stretched out to fill up an entire canyon with sound, still maintaining the simple beats that started it. The dark electro-wash of “Bishop, CA” starts with the line “This blue dawn of sickly light / That is daytime in your embarrassed town / Burns a hole in the fading yellow ribbon / On your fading white color cavalier,” and reminds you of a great Xiu Xiu strength: to find emotional vulnerability in abusrdism.

1997 - Since My House Burnt Down I Now Own a Better View of the Rising Moon (2007)

To some people, 1997 may recall a memory of good things past. For one particular Victory Records group, 1997 will be the harbinger of great music to come. From the suburbs of Chicago comes this young quintet, who creates an effervescent, yet passionate brand of pop-rock that will linger in one’s mind like the best of memories.

Aural happiness. Very catchy and sing-a-longish. Definitely get it.

Circa Survive is an experimental band consisting of former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green and members of the now-defunct This Day Forward, including guitarists Brendan Ekstrom and Colin Frangicetto. Compared to the sound of Green’s former group, the music of Circa Survive taps a different musical influence for Green, who cites Paul Simon, dredg, and Björk among later artists who have more influence on his vocal stylings in Circa Survive which are comparatively less aggressive, as well as his songwriting.

The Monsoon Bassoon - I Dig Your Voodoo (1999)

We have reached crisis point of late. The majority of our esteemed pop stars seem content to trundle along, pushing safe product without a care in the world for unfettered inspiration. So it is with longing arms that we clutch The Monsoon Bassoon close to our heavy bosom. They have come with a malicious intent to bludgeon all musical preconceptions into mush. And they will, ultimately, tug hard on your heartstrings in ways that you won't quite understand.
